Kickoff Meeting of the Guangdong Working Group on Scientific Decision-making and Practice in Response to Climate Change

On January 11, 2024, the Guangdong Working Group on Scientific Decision-making and Practice in Response to Climate Change was officially established in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The meeting was jointly hosted by the Guangdong Low-Carbon Development Promotion Association and iGDP. The working group is comprised of over ten experts from sectors including energy, electricity, building construction, green finance, carbon footprint analysis, and energy storage. The Association presented the 2024 work plan for the group, which includes two to four thematic workshops and two in-depth training sessions. The experts recommended themes for future workshops, such as pathways to carbon neutrality, enhancing power system flexibility, deep industrial decarbonization, controlling greenhouse gas emissions in refrigeration systems, assessing abatement costs and market mechanisms for cutting-edge technologies, and the development of local carbon trading platforms.

On July 3-4, members of the iGDP project team conducted a field research trip to Huainan and Wuhu cities in Anhui Province, focusing on the low-carbon transition of coal power plants and high-energy consumption industries, including coal-fired power plants, chemical plants, cement factories, and new energy vehicle industrial parks. Notably, the Chery Automobile Industrial Park is actively developing a zero-carbon park, aiming to achieve energy self-sufficiency through technologies such as photovoltaics, energy storage, and virtual power plants.
