Workshop on Methane Emission Reduction Capacity Building for Coal Enterprises
To help more enterprises gain a thorough understanding of the technical requirements outlined in the Methodology for Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Projects: Utilization of Low-Concentration Coal Mine Methane and Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) with Methane Concentration Below 8% by Volume and learn the process of developing CCER (China Certified Emission Reduction) projects utilizing low-concentration coal mine methane, the Shanxi Coshare Innovation Institute of Energy & Environment in collaboration with iGDP and the ACTION 2035 Climate Solution Shanxi Center, organized the "Workshop on Methane Emission Reduction Capacity Building for Coal Enterprises" on October 16 in Taiyuan. The workshop aimed to transform emission reduction responsibilities into new competitive advantages in the market and accelerate the green and low-carbon transition of the coal industry. It brought together leading experts involved in the development and practical implementation of the methodology for low-concentration coal mine methane CCER projects. Training sessions covered recent policy developments in methane mitigation, technical specifications of the Methodology, application and field practices of critical measurement instruments, and case-based operational experiences. Over 60 participants attended, including representatives from coal enterprises in Shanxi, companies engaged in methane utilization, and institutions working in the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality space. Ms. Zhu Tongxin, Analyst with iGDP’s Beyond Carbon Program, delivered a presentation titled "Methane Mitigation Outlook: Opportunities and Challenges Toward 2035." She emphasized that methane reduction offers multiple co-benefits, including accelerating global climate change mitigation, improving air quality, and safeguarding agricultural productivity. To advance coal sector methane abatement, she highlighted the importance of local-level action as a key driver, calling for strengthened management and utilization of ultra-low-concentration ventilation air methane (VAM), as well as improved monitoring, reporting, and control of methane emissions from abandoned coal mines (AMM)—a currently under-addressed gap in both data and regulation.

Regional Dialogue: Local Innovation Pathways for Methane Emission Reduction in Coal Mines
On August 27, iGDP, Ember and Shanxi Coshare Innovation in Energy & Environment hosted an online seminar entitled "Regional Dialogue: Local Innovation Pathways for Methane Emission Reduction in Coal Mines." The seminar brought together industry experts from China, India, Indonesia, and Australia to focus on methane emission reduction at the local level in coal mines. The discussion centered around scalable and replicable solutions, as well as the challenges and strategies in addressing policy, technology, and financing issues. A total of 85 participants attended the event.

Low-Carbon Transition Research on the Power and High-Energy Consumption Industries in Shanxi
On July 8-9, members of the iGDP Energy Transition Project team conducted a field research trip to Linfen and Yicheng in Shanxi Province, focusing on the low-carbon transition of steel and coke enterprises. Two steel companies visited during the research have already begun transitioning from long-process to short-process operations for optimization and transformation.

Inter-Regional Coal Methane Emission Reduction Dialogue
On June 9, the Inter-Regional Coal Methane Emission Reduction Dialogue, organized by the Shanxi Coshare Innovation Institute of Energy & Environment and iGDP, was successfully held in Taiyuan. The dialogue convened over 20 experts and enterprise representatives to deliberate on the scientific reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the efficient utilization of coal methane as a clean energy source. The aim was to promote technology implementation, policy coordination, and cross-regional experience sharing, contributing to the green transformation of the national coal industry with the “Shanxi Solution.” Experts analyzed Shanxi’s emission characteristics, the status, and the challenges associated with the implementation of low-concentration gas utilization technologies (e.g., porous combustion for heat production, thermal storage, and oxidation). They also interpreted national and local emission reduction policies, CCER methodology, and the development of a monitoring standard system. Key recommendations were given on technological innovation, business models, policy incentives (such as financial subsidies and land use guarantees), regulatory improvements, and a fair market environment.

Seminar on Electricity Substitution in the Industrial Sector in Shanxi Province during the 15th Five-Year Plan
On April 28th, the Seminar on Electricity Substitution in the Industrial Sector in Shanxi Province during the 15th Five-Year Plan was successfully held in Taiyuan. Organized by the ACTION 2035 Climate Solution Shanxi Center, the seminar convened over 30 representatives from the China Steel Development Research Institute, State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company Economics and Technology Research Institute, Shanxi Province Building Materials Industry Association, Jinzhong Eco-Environmental Bureau, China Electric Power Research Institute and other organizations. The purpose was to discuss strategies for the green and low-carbon transformation of Shanxi, exploring feasible pathways and challenges of electricity substitution. Experts examined the national electric energy substitution policy and existing cases in Shanxi, focusing on key industries such as coal, iron and steel, foundry, chemical industry, cement, glass, and ceramics. Discussions also covered the electrification transformation of process links, key technological innovations, optimization of policies and mechanisms, exploration of business models, and the expansion of investment and financing channels. Experts emphasized that building new electric power systems and industrial transformation are evolving process. Successful experiences in one region may require adaptation for different regions before nationwide implementation.

On December 7, 2024, Shanxi Coshare Innovation Institute of Energy & Environment and Institute for Global Decarbonization Progress jointly announced the establishment of "Action 2035: Shanxi" and held an unveiling ceremony. As the secretariat of the "Shanxi Green and Low-Carbon Transformation Cooperation Platform", it supports daily operations and research on key issues.
